NYFW: Diane von Furstenberg on Getting Serious About Serenity

When asked how many collections she has presented since she first founded her business, Diane von Furstenberglaughed. “Well that’s a good question!” she said backstage at Lincoln Center at her spring 2014 show—what could potentially be her 87th time unveiling new ready-to-wear designs since her first presentation in 1970 at the Gotham Hotel. Has a lot changed since then? Absolutely, she agreed. But one thing has stayed the same. “I still get nervous,” she said. “I was feeling calm all week, and then I couldn’t sleep at all last night.”

It’s that unpredictability in life that is addressed in her latest collection. “It’s such a strange world we live in,” she explained. “I wanted to respond to that by creating something of beauty and serenity, like an oasis.” She is also fighting to create a better place in New York City for the fashion industry as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “It’s really upsetting to me. I’ve been working seriously in giving fashion a place that it deserves," she said. "Fashion week is so important for designers.”

Givenchy's family affair for autumn/winter 2013 campaign

For Givenchy's autumn/winter 2013 campaign, creative director Riccardo Tisci has enlisted his fashion 'family' including actress Amanda Seyfried and stylish mother-daughter duo Carine and Julia Roitfeld.

As well as being a man of many talents, Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci is also a man of many fabulous friends. For his autumn/winter 2013 campaign he has enlisted a handful of his most beautiful, including Carine Roitfeld and her daughter Julia, and Hollywood actress Amanda Seyfried to pose in his gyspsy-inspired, Bambi-adorned wares.

"These people are my family. They have always believed in me. They are very faithful to me," says Tisci. "Faithfulness and love are the most amazing things in what I want to do."

The Roitfelds and Seyfried are joined by Spanish actor Quim Gutiérrez and models Dalianah Arekion and Mariano Ontanon, who complete what Tisci calls his Givenchy "gang" (what we wouldn't give to be a part of that).

"I think it is a moment of history for me in fashion for my own gang. I want to credit each time the people that are very faithful to my style, and faithful as human beings," he adds. "This time, there is a gypsy feeling because it is the inspiration of the collection."

It's Seyfried's first appearance in a high-fashion campaign, and having recently been announced as the new face of the fashion house's Irresistible fragrance it seems she's well and truly been welcomed into the fold.

Carine Roitfeld and daughter Julia, both long-time supporters and fans of Riccardo's work ( Tisci even gifted Julia's baby daughter with some Givenchy couture pieces when she was born ), don floral pieces which look suspiciously like Kim Kardashian's now-legendary Met Ball dress . Mother Carine also styled the shoot, which was photographed by Mert & Marcus.
