NYFW: Even Though Christian Siriano Is "Not Cool," He's Taking Over the World

Christian Siriano has only taken one real vacation in his life (no, really—just keep reading), but he still manages to create whimsical ready-to-wear collections and his popular Payless shoe line. In addition to that, just last week he broke the news that he is adding eyewear, hair care, fragrance, and home decor collections. So basically theProject Runway winner is a Karl Lagerfeldin training. We chatted with the reality TV-star turned runway champ before his show to see how he's fitting it all in and to find out why a proper beauty line may be next on his plate.‬

‪Have you been sleeping?‬
‪Last night was a tough night, but other than that it’s pretty good. I feel like you guys have it very hard.‬
‪Let's talk about your spring collection!‬
‪I took my took my first vacation ever and you know I just loved the island...
‪Wait, your first vacation—ever?‬
‪Ever. I’ve never been to a city when I’ve not done something for work, ever. Even when I was younger, we would go travel places but usually it was something for my mother's work. So [recently] I took 10 friends to Islas Mujeres, which means "island of women." My idea [for the spring collection] was a celebration of women. I loved being there. You just feel good about yourself [there]—with the color-block streets and the homes painted in vibrant colors. I just loved the women who worked in the markets and made their own fabrics and textiles. That inspired the [majority] of it.‬
‪How do we see this influence in the designs?‬
‪I tried to bring cool ways of using raffia and handmade French knot techniques in all the pieces. You would see these girls on the beach all day, and then they tousled their hair up and went out all night. That kind of inspired this whole world.‬
‪What about Payless shoes this season?‬
‪I love creating pieces that are sculptural and cool, and they’re pretty sexy this season. We played a lot with texture, so there are all different fabrications mixed together. We wanted to make them look crafty but in a refined way.‬
‪So why expand into lifestyle brand empire now?‬
‪Honestly, it was just because in the moment it was happening I had a lot of customers asking for different things. That’s what I try to do every season. My collection obviously is not for every girl—it’s not cool. It’s not the oversize slouchy, edgy, downtown girl. It’s about women who want to shop and buy clothes. So, if they want eyewear, let’s give it to them. If they want maybe a fragrance, I want to give it to them. Why not?‬
‪Is a makeup line next?‬
‪I think so, but it's definitely is one of those things that I really need to build. I’m still a young brand. Beauty in that world is a little scary. I’ve done a collaboration with Victoria’s Secret, and hopefully my own line is down the road.‬
‪Well, we’d love to see some of your runway color palettes on nail polishes and lipsticks.‬
‪Definitely. I was a makeup artist for a long time, so it’s something [I've been thinking about.] That’s how I started. I moved to New York City, and I was a makeup artist. So [a makeup line is] down the road, don’t worry.‬
‪Who are some of your favorite It girls right now?‬
‪God, so many. You know I think it’s mostly like girls I love like friends. Atlanta de Cadenet—I went with her to the Style Awards, and we just love each other and get along. She’s coming to the show today. Lizzie Olsen and I are good friends, and she’s amazing. Shailene Woodleycame to the show last season, and we've been friends since I dressed her for her first red carpet to the America Music Awards. Now look at her. She’s an amazing actress. It’s pretty cool.‬
‪Some people are saying NYFW has gotten too mass. Agree or disagree?‬
‪You know what, I think it does and it doesn’t. What I try to bring here is how you mix the two together. I mean, I show Payless shoes on the runway, but they’re really about being cool and sculptural and have a real vision to them, so I definitely think there’s that world to it. I try to show that the technique and the workmanship that goes into the clothes is still important to me.‬

NYFW: Diane von Furstenberg on Getting Serious About Serenity

When asked how many collections she has presented since she first founded her business, Diane von Furstenberglaughed. “Well that’s a good question!” she said backstage at Lincoln Center at her spring 2014 show—what could potentially be her 87th time unveiling new ready-to-wear designs since her first presentation in 1970 at the Gotham Hotel. Has a lot changed since then? Absolutely, she agreed. But one thing has stayed the same. “I still get nervous,” she said. “I was feeling calm all week, and then I couldn’t sleep at all last night.”

It’s that unpredictability in life that is addressed in her latest collection. “It’s such a strange world we live in,” she explained. “I wanted to respond to that by creating something of beauty and serenity, like an oasis.” She is also fighting to create a better place in New York City for the fashion industry as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “It’s really upsetting to me. I’ve been working seriously in giving fashion a place that it deserves," she said. "Fashion week is so important for designers.”

HESTER STREET FAIR HEADS WEST BY ELLE

In just two short years, the Hester Street Fair has become a warm-weather institution in Manhattan, attracting hordes of stylish browsers on the prowl for the sorts of things you’d never find stocked at Barneys. Having conquered the discerning New Yorker, founders SuChin Pak, Ron Castellano, Adam Zeller, and Suhyun Pak are bringing the street fair west, setting up a sister market in Hollywood for the summer. Local business owners—and savvy shoppers—get ready. “At the heart of what we do, we’re a launching pad for young entrepreneurs,” explains SuChin. “We see everywhere from Etsy to eBay people doing really amazing things on the side, so we’ve given them a platform to hopefully quit their day jobsand do what they’re passionate about in life.” The passions vary from dip-dyed dresses to Peruvian-Japanese food, but the sentiment—handmade, small batches, artisanal ingredients—runs throughout. “We try to make sure that the vendors that we pick are truly unique, that they’re committed to what they’re doing, because our vendors are our best advertisers,” SuChin says. There are a few minor differences, as is often the case with New York versus LA: the fair on the West Coast has space on its side, and for the 2012 season it will run just four times. But perhaps most exciting is the diverse array of stalls: in advance of its kickoff tomorrow, SuChin gave ELLE.com her picks for the most stylish Hester Street Fair Hollywood vendors, after the cut.

ROJAS
“It’s like tribal-meets-Coachella-meets-Ibiza. I know it’s a strange combo, but it works and it’s very ‘summertime in LA.’ Each piece is completely original and they even customize your Chucks.”
CLOUD CLOUD
“Claudia Zhao is a local designer, by way of Brooklyn. I met her in NY and was thrilled to see her in LA creating this incredible line of bags. They’re really simple, inspired by geometric shapes, and made of the softest leathers. I have the messenger bag, which is the perfect-size bag for summer, but have been eyeing her clutch—which could be my favorite piece!”
FLEA MARKET GIRL
“I think she’s going to be one of the busiest vendors on June 2. They create each piece by hand using wood, brass, and bronze. It’s all bad-ass and quirky, very rock’n’roll. I would recommend wearing their stuff layered by the dozens, [and] the price point is really great, so picking up lots of pieces is going to be easy.”
STANDARD GOODS
“I just spoke with [owner] Garrett Colton, and he’s going with a ‘California Summer’ theme with his booth. He wanted to celebrate our first outing west and, of course, the summer season. I’ve got my eye on the vintage fashion books he’ll be bringing from Lisa Eisner’s early days.”
FAIR SEASON
“One of my favorite vintage vendors for opening day. Her stuff is how I like it—special and affordable! She’s really good at picking vintage items that are just that perfect worn-in without any fussiness. She’s bringing a lot of stuff that will be perfect for summer.”
JILL AIKO YEE
“I’ve been wearing her stuff ever since I moved to LA. It’s all handmade and inspired by very simple linens cut in a way that fits almost any body type. I love her mix of patterns, but also that her materials are so high-end; it’s all cut from the most incredible silks and cottons.”

LOUIS VUITTON GETS DOTTY WITH JAPANESE ARTIST YAYOI KUSAMA

Louis Vuitton has a long history of iconic artist collaborations under Marc Jacobs’s direction: there were Stephen Sprouse’s graffiti bags in 2001, Takashi Murakami’s colorful monogram bags in 2003, and Richard Prince’s joke-printed bags in 2007. Now, the brand is pairing up with a new artist: Yayoi Kusama.
Jacobs first met Kusama in 2006, when she presented him with a monogrammed Vuitton bag painted all over with her signature polka dots. Now that the two are teaming up in a bigger way, those same dots will be covering everything from trenchcoats to silk pajamas to watches and hitting Vuitton stores on July 10—just in time for the Whitney Museum’s Kusama retrospective which opens two days later. A second installment of the collaboration—monogrammed leather goods covered in Kusama’s tentaclelike “nerves” motif—will hit in October.
“Her energy is just endless,” Jacobs said of the Japanese artist. “Through the painstaking sort of obsession in each of her canvasses and installations that she’s created, you see this world that never ends. I guess that’s what I admire and that’s what I respond to in terms of feeling for her and for her work… For many people who don’t look at art or go to galleries, or maybe they’re not aware of Kusama’s work, there will be a new venue, a new place to see this work and to come to appreciate it through the eyes of Louis Vuitton.”
See one more image of the collection after the jump.
