THE KARDASHIANS ARE LAUNCHING BEAUTY

by TOMMYE FITZPATRICK / Courtesy of elle mag

Fresh off the heels of Kim Kardashian’s latest fragrance launch, she’s just announced a new beauty venture—this time, with her sisters. Together, they’re launching a cosmetic line called Khroma Beauty.
“Makeup has been an essential part of our lives for so long,” the sisters told E!. “Like fashion, it’s always changing and evolving just as we do and we can’t wait to share this new venture with our fans!”
According to the release, the products—think a “Million Dollar Mask” made with 24k gold dust, a lipgloss holster meant to be worn like a garter on the thigh, as well as eyelashes, mascaras, and compacts—aim to help “emulate the eyes, lips and complexion looks for which Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe are famous.”
A special holiday assortment hits Ulta stores in December, with a larger array launching in early 2013. A preview of the products, after the cut.

GUCCI NOW HAS A HORSE

by TOMMYE FITZPATRICK / Courtesy of Elle mag

Karl Lagerfeld may have a new cat—with its own Twitter handle, no less—but Gucci has also acquired a new animal: a horse. The house, which has long been associated with equestrian chic, renamed the stallion Guccio after house founder Guccio Gucci, WWD reports. Unlike Karl’s cat Choupette, Guccio is not so much a pet. He may make an appearance at the Olympics—or at least, that is the hope: he’s currently residing in Holland, at the stables of Edwina Alexander, currently the world’s top female horse-jumper.

LOUIS VUITTON GETS DOTTY WITH JAPANESE ARTIST YAYOI KUSAMA

Louis Vuitton has a long history of iconic artist collaborations under Marc Jacobs’s direction: there were Stephen Sprouse’s graffiti bags in 2001, Takashi Murakami’s colorful monogram bags in 2003, and Richard Prince’s joke-printed bags in 2007. Now, the brand is pairing up with a new artist: Yayoi Kusama.
Jacobs first met Kusama in 2006, when she presented him with a monogrammed Vuitton bag painted all over with her signature polka dots. Now that the two are teaming up in a bigger way, those same dots will be covering everything from trenchcoats to silk pajamas to watches and hitting Vuitton stores on July 10—just in time for the Whitney Museum’s Kusama retrospective which opens two days later. A second installment of the collaboration—monogrammed leather goods covered in Kusama’s tentaclelike “nerves” motif—will hit in October.
“Her energy is just endless,” Jacobs said of the Japanese artist. “Through the painstaking sort of obsession in each of her canvasses and installations that she’s created, you see this world that never ends. I guess that’s what I admire and that’s what I respond to in terms of feeling for her and for her work… For many people who don’t look at art or go to galleries, or maybe they’re not aware of Kusama’s work, there will be a new venue, a new place to see this work and to come to appreciate it through the eyes of Louis Vuitton.”

How to Trim Your Own Bangs

Have your bangs become a bit of a burden? You’re not alone. This style requires a lot of mane-maintenance. If they’re growing out at an alarming rate, we suggest learning how to snip them yourself. Celebrity hairstylist Angelo David of Angelo David Salon in New York City shares a few simple foolproof tips on keeping your fringe looking fabulous at all times.
  • Step 1: Starting with dry hair, section off a triangular section in the front, starting an inch or two from the crown of the head.
  • Step 2: Using a fine-toothed comb, evenly gather hair in the front, letting it fall on the temples.
  • Step 3: To create a blunt bang, hold hair taut with your fingers and slowly cut horizontally across, cutting a quarter inch at a time. (Make sure your scissors are sharp to make this process seamless and concise.) To create a wispy, textured look, twist the hair you’ve sectioned off a few times and hold it taut between your fingers. From there, begin cutting the ends at a 45-degree angle.
  • Step 4: Don’t cut too much at once, and stop to check your work in the mirror regularly. You can always do additional trimming, if needed.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s design debut for Diet Coke is unveiled

French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier has given the soft drink's bottles an haute makeover.
BY Olivia Bergin

No, your eyes are not deceiving you; we reported last month how French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier is this year's creative director for Diet Coke, and here are the fruits of his labour.
The ‘Day’ and 'Night' bottles, available from Harvey Nichols from April 16

The enfant terrible of Paris Fashion Week has conceived two bottle designs, named 'Day' and 'Night' - which harbour all the design elements of his famous fragrances. The feminine corsets are there in the 'Night' design, while 'Day' features the Breton stripes Gaultier has spent 35 years making his signature.
British actress Gemma Arterton helped Gaultier unveil the new styles at an event in London last night.

Fashion fans will be able to snap up the stylish beverages from Harvey Nichols stores nationally from April 16, but look out for the chic collector's set - which includes a limited-edition iconic Diet Coke glass featuring a blue and white stripy motif.
A third bottle, entitled 'Tattoo' and inspired by Gaultier's love of body art, will be released later in the year.

Gaultier follows in the footsteps of maverick Karl Lagerfeld, who was Diet Coke's designer-in-residence last year, as well as designers Matthew Williamson, Gianfranco Ferrè, Marni, and Roberto Cavalli.

SPOTTED: VUITTON’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL

It’s not unusual to see crews of artists inside the windows of luxury boutiques on a seasonal basis, but to see skilled artisans work their magic on scaffolding? Only in Paris — and only Louis Vuitton.  We stumbled across the not-yet open Vuitton Joaillerie store on the corner of the Place Vendôme on the Rue de la Paix after Balmain’s fall show.  At least six people were hard at work, affixing individual gold, pin-sized dots to the already sketched design.  If they put that much work into the cardboard barriers, we can’t wait to see what they do with the boutique.

Is There Life After Modeling?

I found this article interesting for those who are in the Modeling Field.. Check it out

Karolina Kurkova, Angela Lindvall, and Coco Rocha plot the future of their relevance.

Courtesy of New York News Mag/ By Jada Yuan

High above New York on the 21st-floor balcony of the Cooper Square Hotel, German television is filming Karolina Kurkova teaching ten aspiring models how to walk a runway. “It literally looks like we’re walking on skyscrapers!” the Czech native, 27, says in enthusiastic English that later will be partially dubbed over in German. The girls, plucked from a Deutschland-wide search, at least pretend to understand.

Battling stiff winds and language barriers, Kurkova demonstrates three runway walks: high fashion, couture, and “show,” which basically means pretending to wear giant Victoria’s Secret wings—a technique in which Kurkova is quite expert. Then, to the delight of the Teutonic producers, she gets her heel stuck between floor slats. Her fumbling to free herself is a moment that, along with the many times she bursts into tears eliminating girls, will be played on repeat in stridently dramatic European promos.
The show, called Das Perfekte Model (The Perfect Model), is Kurkova’s first step toward building the kind of career that keeps a model in the spotlight after shoots have dried up. The greatest post-modeling successes in the past decade have been Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks. And not surprisingly, Kurkova and her producers are billing Das Perfekte Model as a toned-down, “documentary-style” counterpart to Klum’s second-best-known TV-hosting gig: the megahit Germany’s Next Topmodel (itself derived from Banks’s Top Modeljuggernaut).

Looming in the background of every model’s career, even one as thriving as Kurkova’s, is the inevitable fear: aging out. The thirst for fresh faces in modeling is so intense that the Council of Fashion Designers of America has issued a plea for designers and modeling agencies not to let girls under 16 walk at New York Fashion Week. Not everybody complies.

So what’s a woman shunned from a girl’s world to do? Try acting (Milla Jovovich, Amber Valetta, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Tyra Banks), play music (Karen Elson,Irina Lazareanu, Banks again), become a photographer (Helena Christensen, Banks again), start a beauty line (Miranda Kerr), start a yoga line (Christy Turlington), start a clothing line (Kate Moss, Erin Wasson), start a jewelry line (too many to count), start a furniture line (Cindy Crawford), get a bachelor’s in comparative religion and Eastern philosophies (Turlington again), run a charity (where to begin), run for Estonian Parliament (Carmen Kass), marry rich (Stephanie Seymour, Christie Brinkley), or become the First Lady of France (Carla Bruni).

In dance, another industry ruthless in spitting out its genetically gifted workers, there’s actually a foundation for “career transition” funded by the Newhouse family. Modeling has no such safety net. “You’d be stupid not to think you have a shelf life,” says Iman, 56, who now runs a $25 million cosmetics company. “I knew I had to become a brand. And that brand was me.”

But the trick for Kurkova and two other models who are thinking hard about their futures—Coco Rocha and Angela Lindvall—is how to build a populist brand without screwing up their still-active careers as high-fashion models.

Put another way: Can a QVC line ever coexist with the cover of Vogue?

The youngest of the three is Rocha, age 23, who’s big enough she got a shout-out in a Kanye West song; Tyra Banks has called her “the queen of posing.” Rocha thought “modeling was just going to be a summer thing and then I’d go home,” she says. “Then I went to Asia. Then I worked with Steven [Meisel].” Now she even has friends like Karlie Kloss, 19, arguably the most famous face of her generation, joking that girls in Rocha’s class (“the old-lady crew,” as Rocha calls them) have stuck around too long. Yet Rocha is convinced she’s found modeling’s holy grail for longevity: social media. “Once I started making noise, I thought, I’m not going anywhere.”

Making noise certainly worked for Heidi Klum, 38, who started her career in 1992—too late to be a supermodel and too curvy to be a waif. Clothes “would get stuck on my boobs,” Klum says. She wound up doing catalogues until she “nagged and nagged and nagged” Victoria’s Secret. She got a publicist, who helped her get Sports Illustrated, which led to Leno, which proved she could do TV, which led to Project Runway and her becoming far more influential in fashion than she ever was as a model.

It also worked for Cindy Crawford, 46. Against her agents’ advice, she took an unpaid job as the first host of MTV’s House of Style, which gave her a new, large, male fan base that led to a huge campaign with Pepsi. “I definitely made a choice to go more all-America,” she says. “I felt that was my brand.”
